7/1 La Baraka

La Baraka (6c,6b,6c,6a,6a,6c+,5b+, ~170m, #502, p.179) in the Six Fois Zette sector of L'Escales was our last multipitch of the vacation. It was also our hardest multipitch, a mental and physical triumph that left us feeling great at our trip's end.

We rappelled from Belvedere de la Carelle along the route, but since Ticket Danger (#506) crosses and share a pitch with La Baraka route finding was a bit confusing, especially at the bottom. Ultimately, we did a modied version of the route, with Eric starting on the pumpy 6c second pitch of Ticket Danger . He got within a bolt of linking this to the end of the first pitch (6b) for La Baraka, but rope drag was too heavy, and he had to lower to the ambiguous belay station which he accidently climbed past. Amos re-lead the 6b second pitch. The third pitch (6c) has many holds obscuring the best ones, but it is a nice, sustained face climb. Eric encountered some coordelettes that people had left filling three bolts, so that Amos had to raise to knife to cut them down. The belay station of this pitch is hidden behind a ledge after the last bolt, and is also about 5m above. Approaching is a blind committment, but the station is there and the climbing is easy at that point. The next two pitches of 6a were uneventful and easy. Since we had to move to another ledge after his last 6a lead, Eric also lead the 6c+ pitch directly afterward. It was very challenging with lot of cool, intense moves. Amos finished with the 6b+ pitch whose awkward crux comes right before the end.

The following movies were taken on 6/30 on the last 6b+ pitch of La Baraka.
