A pair of blue-footed boobies at Fernandina Island. As the name suggests, these birds have fabulously blue feet, which (as it turns out) plays an important role in courtship and breeding. I was surprised at the high variation in foot color among these birds. I saw everything from a light, pale cyan to a dark turquoise. Even comparing the feet of just the two birds in this picture, you can see the differences.
