Line Drawings of 3D Shapes

This project examines how human artists make line drawings and how human viewers perceive those drawings. In the first study, we asked artists to make drawings of rendered images of 3D shapes, and compared the results to current line drawing algorithms. In the second, we asked viewers to interpret the drawings using a gauge orientation task.

Interactive, high-quality line drawing

A continuing project involves the development of new algorithms to improve the quality and speed of computer generated line drawings. Three related papers have been written so far: "Fast High-Quality Line Visibility" (2009), "Partial Visibility for Stylized Lines" (2008), and "Directing Gaze in 3D Models with Stylized Focus" (2006).

dpix, an implementation of these algorithms, is available from the dpix project page.
