the format-out function?

The book Dylan Programming uses the format-out function, and says that
it is not included in Apple Dylan, and the Dyaln Reference Manual that
came with Apple Dylan seems to provide no way for printing text, that I
can find.  What is in the Apple Dylan specification that provides
format-out functionality?  Or, in other words, how would I do what is
being done with format-out in Apple Dylan's interpreter?  Is format-out
in the updated specification?  thanks.
