    Photos of Chaim Lauterstein

Chaim was a veteran of the Crimean War. He and Etel lived in the same area, in Ostropol in the Ukraine (or maybe Starokonstantinov, which is nearby) . They married when he returned from the Russian army service. He was a box maker in Russia, and he owned a stationary store in the US.

Sonia was the first of Chaim and Etel's children to emigrate to the US. She sent for her brother Harry and the two of them sent for Papa Chaim.

Etel came in 1909 accompanied by Gussie, Max, and Rose. They had to leave Abie behind until they could send for him. He would not be allowed into the US until they could establish that he would not be a burden on the country.
