Etel and her sister Nachuma were orphaned at an early age. There were raised by an aunt, who evidently lived in Their family name was possibly Butzin and the aunt's Cardone, or vice versa. We never really knew which.

Etel had an Uncle Maier, who was a no-fooling miser. He worked as a vestmaker. He had a daughter, Sarah Helfman, who lived in Detroit. She had two sons who were both lawyers. Uncle was very tall and in those days you did not spend what you didn't have to. I (Anne) remember stories of how he walked across the Brooklyn Bridge many times, carrying his sewing machine on his back. Evidently in those days you had to have your own machine to be employed. Also tales of when his wife was sick, everytime he gave her a dose of medicine, he refilled the space in the bottle with water.

Sonia always used to visit him in the old age home where he spent his last days. When he died, they found that he had willed everything to Sonia, who refused it and insisted that it go to his daughter.

Etel came to the US in 1909 on the SS Vreeland out of Antwerp. With her were Gussie, Max and Rose, who were 11, 9 and 6. They left from Ostropol, where they left Abie until they could send for him.
