We chose to explore the domain of bike theft prevention and reporting. Most
college students get around campus by bike. Half of these bikes get
stolen and most of these thefts occur in the same places, usually by
the same people. However, most bikers have no way of knowing where the
majority of these thefts happen. Furthermore, most bike thefts go
unreported both because victims know there is a small chance of their
bikes being found, and also because of all the paperwork that is
involved.
We hope to solve this by creating an app in which people can easily
input and save their bike(s) information with a convenient barcode
scanner option to get the serial number, report it stolen to the
authorities and campus communities, and access data provided by other
users, such as frequent places of theft and best types of locks, so
they can avoid those places and prevent their bikes from getting
stolen. We also provide a way for users to report locations and photos
of bikes that look abandoned or stolen, and display them to the
community, so that owners can easily locate them.
