Solid State Drives

My Machines

  • Thinkmate - Custom servers, workstations and notebooks
  • Lenovo Thinkpad W500 - Nice in terms of CPU and memory, but the display is rather disappointing. The high resolution is great, but the colors are faint and dull. In addition, I had quite a few out-of-the-box issues with it:
    • Blue screens - were related to an ATI driver, and were resolved after a BIOS update (no thanks to Lenovo's support. In general I can't say that their support people are the brightest…)
    • The hard drive made noises and had to be replaced. This was very efficient however, and I got the new drive the second day after I placed my complaint.
    • This link contains other useful information.
  • HP Compaq nx7400 - Had it for 4 years (still keeping it around) and was very satisfied with it. HP customer service, in Israel at least, was superb. Getting the extended warranty is very recommended (I've done a 3-year plan)

Routing

  • I use two Cisco Linksys WRT54GL for my home. One good feature of this model is that you can easily install on it third-part firmwares that provide enhanced functionality. I use one router as the main wireless router (that is connected to the cable modem), and the second as a range extender to get the signal to those hard-to-reach places in the house. Here are instructions for setting up the range extender.
