The Workshop on Virtualization in Mobile Computing (MobiVirt) will bring together researchers and practitioners interested in virtual execution environments for mobile applications and systems.

As handsets, PDA’s, netbooks, and other mobile computing devices continue to evolve into devices that resemble full computers, there is a growing interest in applying virtualization technology to these devices. Mobivirt seeks to bring together practitioners and researchers in operating systems, architecture, networks, programming languages, and security who are applying virtualization, broadly defined, to existing and emerging mobile computing systems. Today, many handset’s have a closed operating system, making it difficult for outsiders to innovate. Even with the movement for open source, such as Android and Symbian, it may still be difficult to innovate, given the requirement to control access to the cellular network, the desire to protect against virus and rogue software, and the plethora of closed peripheral devices. Mobile handset virtualization offers the potential to open up the platform without sacrificing the protection and security. The workshop hopes to explore this possibility in greater depth.

The workshop proceedings will be archived in the ACM Digital Library.
