This folder, MHP-Saltzer-060508, contains an archive of files from Jerry Saltzer's office scanned by the Multics History Project. The archive date is 8 May 2006. Background: The Multics History Project (MHP) is an ongoing project undertaken by Roger Roach and Olin Sibert in 2004 to capture in digital form all existing documentation about Multics. A huge number of documents were produced and distributed on paper in the course of Multics design, development, and deployment. As part of the MHP, in 2006 Roach and Sibert scanned all of the documents pertaining to Multics and its predecessor system, CTSS, found on the bookshelves and in the personal files of M.I.T. Professor Jerry Saltzer, with the exception of a few materials that were physically unsuitable for the available scanner. The scanned documents, which filled eight banker's boxes, were then deposited with the MIT Archives. More information about the Multics History Project can be found at https://multicians.org/mhp.html and http://www.softwarepreservation.org/meetings/2006/2006-02-15/ (visit the link labeled "Multics History Project Presentation") The materials: The scanned documents are in individual .pdf files in named subfolders within the two folders "bookcases" and "filedrawers". A third folder named "contents" contains two finding aids. For the bookcases (boxes 1 - 4), the finding aid is replicated in .xls, .csv, and .pdf form. It provides complete tables of contents listing the date, title, author, and number of pages of each scanned document. For the personal files (boxes 5 - 8) the finding aid is in .txt form and starts with a discussion of the scanning and archiving method. It then identifies each scanned document based on the labels found in the file drawers and information in the document itself. The "Contents" folder also contains two text files listing materials from numbered series that are known to be missing and a few items that were discovered and added after the MHP scans were completed.
