2015 Hive Workshops

Saturday, Jan. 17, 2015, 9:30–12:30pm

Location: Golden Ball Tavern, Weston, MA

Dress up your gowns with a sleeve treatment. In this class you'll learn how to make sleeve flounces and cuffs. Gussy up your silk gown with a pair of sleeve flounces or perhaps add some style to your chintz gown with a pair of cuffs. Bring the left over fabric from your gown and make up one or both sleeve treatments. Maybe you have a gown in your future—learn how to make and correctly attach these lovely adornments.

In the workshop you will make a pair of muslin sleeve ruffles patterned from an original 18th century pair. You can wear these with a fancy gown or use them to dress up your chintz gown. This workshop includes all the materials you need to make a pair of muslin sleeve ruffles.

Saturday, Feb. 7, 2015, 10:00–4pm

Location: Waltham, MA

We'll start the class by looking at a range of caps and learn how their style evolved over a twenty-year period. You will then try on many types of caps both plain and fancy from the mid-1760's to the early 1780's. You get to pick the one best suited for your impression (and that looks best on you) and then sew your new cap.

All these caps are either patterned from originals and use period construction methods combined with designs modeled from extant caps from period artwork.

At the end of the class, depending on the complexity of your cap you should be well on its way to completion.

Cost: $50, which includes all materials (There is a small materials surcharge for some of the fancier caps).

In preparation for the arrival of the Hermione, we are pleased to be offering a gown workshop on the weekend of June 20 & 21 in Waltham, MA. You have the choice of making either our English gown (stomacher front/en fourreau back) or the new Larkin & Smith "Fashionable Gown" (referred to as a zone front).
