This past term, Tammerlin Drummond and I created The Ones Left Behind (www.theonesleftbehind.org), a project that explores geographical patterns of gun violence in Boston and the impact of the deaths of victims on their families and communities. Our project involved mapping the locations of homicides, integrating street-level imagery with maps (using Google Street View), and audio and video interviews with family members of gun homicide victims.
The site was our final project in MAS.700: Future of News and Participatory Media; for me, working with an accomplished journalist like Tammy was a highlight of the class. By focusing on the "ones left behind", this project could help families of victims of urban gun violence find their political voice.
