Here is a quick guide that introduces the basic functionalities of SmartCommuting, and shows you how to optimize commuting trips with it.
Start by inputing your start position in the origin box. The auto autocomplete function will help you locate the origin quickly. On the map, the origin is represented by a red marker.
Next, input your destination(s). You can give an exact address that maps to one single location, such as '32 Vassar Street, Cambridge, MA', or a description like 'pizza near central square'. SmartCommuting will retrive all locations that fits your input, and show them on the map (marked by blue markers).
Specify the departure and expected arrival times of your trip using the constraints slider.
For each destination, you may click its marker and see a summary of it, including name, rating, price, and fastest and cheapest ways to get there.
Click the label to get a summary of all transportation options to this destination.
You may click on each option to get the instructions.
The ranking of the transportation options is determined by the constraints and preference settings, including available options, cost of travel, the importance of arrival time, and the penalty for walking time. You may change your preference settings using the 'Settings' panel.
After modifying the preference settings, you may click the info window again to update the list of options and its ranking.
