A finite element simulation solves for the new positions and shapes of the affected brick and dirt elements. The bricks maintain their rectilinear shape because the material has a large value for Young’s Modulus, an elasticity parameter. The dirt between the bricks deforms easily because it has a low value for this parameter.
The simulation computed in this example is textbook, but the results are exciting because they demonstrate the interaction of different materials arranged in a complex pattern. Constructing interesting models for finite element systems has been a challenge, but procedural modeling offers new possibilities. |
