I use a simplification and mesh improvement strategy that targets the removal or improvement of the elements with the poorest proportions. I gather the 10% lowest quality elements in the mesh and attempt to perform one of these different mesh operations on the element. An operation is not performed if it does not improve the local mesh quality, or if it significantly alters the shape of the internal and external material boundaries.
