Throughout these local mesh transformations it is important to maintain
the consistency of the model, and prevent the introduction of mesh
degeneracies such as negative volumes or improper connectivity. A
complete list of the local checks we perform is given in the paper. We
found these checks crucial in the implementation for robustness. In
particular, negative or zero volume elements may be present in the input
models or at intermediate stages of deformation even though the
connectivity of the mesh is proper. These checks ensure that no
transformation introduces degeneracies.
