Examples focusing on the kind of knowledge is to be captured

James enters, ``Who can I ask about activities in Drazni.'' START doesn't know. James sends structured email to a colleague, who answers by filling in a form in the received email to the effect that, ``You should talk to Colonel Hackworthy.'' HAWK notes that Colonel Hackworthy is an expert who can answer questions that START can connect with ``Who can I ask about activities in Drazni.'' Thus, the original question becomes annotation attached to a human knowledge source. Similar interactions would lead to unobtrusive annotation of text, images, videos, maps, and all sorts of other knowledge.

James needs to look at a map that captures the extent to which Grafgran rebels have penetrated Drazni. He asks, ``Show me a map of the political boundaries in Drazni,'' but, alas, START can't help. James, having been through this sort of problem before, clicks through a few HTML pages, ultimately landing at an Index of Current Maps of Crisis Sites, whereupon he selects Drazni. HAWK notes that requests similar to ``Show me a map of the political boundaries in Drazni,'' were answered by the Crisis Site Index; HAWK now asks if Drazni is a crisis site, and on James's affirmative response, adds information to START's taxonomy for intelligence information.

James receives structured electronic mail from a trainee asking for instructions on what to do in the event the Drazni radio reports troop movements. James replies, instructing the trainee to (1) check on the troop movement using national assets, (2) check on recent HUMINT sources, (3) if the movements are validated, notify the regional supervisor with priority URGENT, and (4) annotate his report with ``suspected troop movements near Drazni.'' HAWK not only gets the report annotation, but also absorbs the four-point procedure with the annotation ``process for handling suspected troop movements.''
