Comparison with Ongoing Research

Our work centers around the use of Natural Language (and other natural interaction modalities in the Intelligent Room) in an open Web-based environment to acquire significant volumes of three kinds of knowledge:

  1. Annotations: Information about otherwise opaque (to the system) information (e.g. texts, graphics, videos) which makes the information accessible.

  2. Background knowledge: Ontologies, domain theories, etc. which provide semantic footing for a variety of knowledge-based activities, including retrieval via annotations.

  3. Know-How: Chunked problem solving expertise which raises the system's power to that of an expert.

To our knowledge, our approach is unique. However, many other projects have attacked similar problems from a different point of view with a different set of technical tools. Many of these projects have produced useful capabilities, ontologies, and domain theories which may be of significant value to our project. We will bootstrap from these other capabilities.
