All work to be performed will be bound solely by MIT's policies on intellectual rights, which are consistent with federal guidlines as applied to Universities. MIT typically retains ownership of rights to software and data, but grants royalty-free license to the government for use of software and data developed with federal funds. Software not developed with federal funds, or otherwise contractually encumbered, typically belongs to the author or authors, and some elements of our large natural language system fall into this category. The research will, of course, require the use of certain proprietary systems, such as operating systems, database systems, and systems engaged remotely via Internet and Web connections.
