Floating Point Addition

• Match exponents by shifting number with smaller exponent to the right

• Add the significands (fractions)

• Normalize the sum

• Check for underflow and overflow in sum

0.510 = 1.000 x 2-1 -0.437510 = -1.110 x 2-2

-1.110 x 2-2 is smaller, convert to -0.111 x 2-1

Add significands 1.000 and -0.111 to get -0.001

Sum is 0.001 x 2-1 , normalize to 1.000 x 2-4
