Surely one of the first things that should be changed is the gotcha
that you can modify literal constants?  C used to make this mistake
with strings, but they fixed it.

Andy once pointed out the oddity that the case and select expressions
behave differently when there is no match.  This should be cleaned up ...
sometime ...
