art description | An interactive video installation draws on classic film
archives to explore contemporary issues surrounding images,
advertising, and group participation. |
art proposal | People are led in groups of up to 6 into a small movie theater, through a standard turnstile. Inside a projection of a movie is frozen on a frame. As people clap for the movie, the frames advance slowly, and when enough participants clap synchronously, the movie begins to play on its own. As the movie progresses and the clapping continues, the movie reveals itself as an edited version of triumph of the will [the nazi propaganda movie by leni Riefenstahl]. Deals with complicity and the distinction and gradual fading between individual and group behavior. The space will emphasize this distinction as well. |

art status | The work is not completed. Plans are laid out to divide work among the four artists and microcontroller and video projection design should be finished before March 15, with the last two weeks spent on video editing and construction in Art Interactive. |
art maintenance | Should run without any maintenance, just needs to be turned on and off - for opening night we may play ticket stub taker to enhance the effect. |
art auto | Just turning the computer and projector on/off... we will set startup routines. |
art sound | The volume ramps up steadily throughout the ~3 minute performance, becoming slightly uncomfortable to people inside the theatre, however we are soundproofing the theatre to a large degree so sound outside should remain reasonable, but definitely audible. |
art light | Requires a dark environment, but we are creating one, so requires nothing on your part. |
art needs | It would be easier for us to construct in a corner, but this is not crucial. |
art safety | Should not be, only projection. |
