art description | A mixture of live, delayed, and pre-recorded sound creates a quadraphonic soundscape that is individual to each listener and each moment. |
art proposal | I would like to create a new quadraphonic audio installation entitled Performance 0405. The work will consist of a hidden microphone, four speakers, and a series of hardware effects boxes. Performance 0405 would gather audio material from the location and mix it with prerecorded sound. The sounds taken from within the installation would be delayed and altered using delays, pitch shifting and other effects.
The work itself has a series of scenes which play out, in which some predefined mixture of live and recorded sound are moved throughout the space using the effects equipment. However, each scene will use a large amount of live and delayed sound, thus making the actual experience by the viewer randomized by who has seen the work previously and what sounds they have made in the space. While the exact effects and sequences will be preset in each scene, the sounds that are being manipulated will be determined by the visitors to the space. In addition, since some of the delays will be up to 20 minutes, a particular viewer's perception will be determined by those visitors who have preceded the current viewer.
I have successfully used many of the elements in this piece in previous works, such as Hallway (2004). However, a new element in this work will be the specialization of sound through a quadraphonic speaker setup. Sounds will flow and pan around the room with constant movement. My hope is that this specialization will create a physical and special experience beyond the modified audio. |
