art description | Homespun is dedicated to anyone who has ever felt turned upside down
by forces beyond their control. It is a dollhouse rotating slowly
end-over-end on an axle and a video feed of the inside of the house.
(In the video, the rotation is removed, so the furniture prowls
slowly around the room from floor to wall to ceiling.) It is about the
heaviness and danger of the objects with which we surround ourselves
and the fragility of the shells we live in. |
art proposal | The idea is pretty simple. It's a highly detailed and fully furnished dollhouse complete with dolls. It has an open front with plexiglass covering it. There is a strong, slow motor attached to the back, which rotates the whole house upside down->right-side up over and over. This setup is visible out of one angle of the window. There is a camera set up watching the rotating house, which is fed to a computer which removes the rotation and potentially applies other informational overlays. (There might be other cameras mounted in individual rooms if I can get it going.) The resulting images are displayed on a monitor from the other angle in the window. In the monitor, the contents of the house slide up, down, and around the walls, floors, and ceilings. |
