In certain respects, the functions performed by VisualWorks's ApplicationModel instances parallel those performed by Smalltalk Express's ViewManager instances. Those functions, previously explained in Chapter 32, are as follows:

• An application model is the receiver of messages that start the application.
• An application model serves as a command center, enabling information to flow to and from widgets. In serving the command-center function, an application model typically contains instance variables that tie together an application.

Because an application's application model has so many responsibilities, you can think of it as the hub that ties together the entire application. Accordingly, ApplicationModel subclasses typically have names that include the word application.
