Morris F. Collen Award
Morris F. Collen Award
2013
The American College of Medical Informatics (ACMI) each year awards a “lifetime achievement” award to someone who has made sustained contributions to the field. The citation reads, in part
The award is given in honor of Morris F. Collen, a pioneer in the field. The award is the “highest honor in informatics that is presented by the American College of Medical Informatics to an individual whose personal commitment and dedication to biomedical informatics has made a lasting impression on healthcare and biomedicine.”
As many of you know, Pete Szolovits’ research centers on the application of AI methods to problems of medical decision making and design of information systems for health care institutions and patients. He has worked on problems of diagnosis, therapy planning, execution and monitoring for various medical conditions, computational aspects of genetic counseling, controlled sharing of health information, and privacy and confidentiality issues in medical record systems.
The award was presented at the 2013 AMIA Symposium in Washington, DC, on November 17. In my brief acceptance speech, I thanked the community for providing an intellectual home for my work and interests. I also approximately quoted Peter O’Toole when he received an honorary Academy Award in 2003; he reminded people that he was "still in the game". I think my version was “I’m still working!”
