5 years, 10 months, 7 day The whole family visited Disneyland this weekend. Griff had a great time, but insists he still likes Great Wolf better.

5 years, 8 months, 1 day Griffin and Mama just returned from a week in the Colorado mountains. Griffin spent the days skiing while Mama worked. Although he found things shockingly cold at first, he quickly warmed up to the trip with the help of snowball fights, snow angels, and hot chocolate.

5 years, 6 months, 9 days An x-ray just confirmed that Griffin did indeed swallow a quarter a week ago. The quarter is currently separated from the outside world by three feet of solid stool. Miralax has been administered.

5 years, 6 months, 1 day Griff thought a lot this year about who Santa is. He's pretty sure his Mama's a conspiracy theorist. How else would she not believe in Santa in the face of all of the evidence? It seems unlikely to him that NORAD, the post office, television, stores, and people everywhere are all in on a giant scam. But he's unsure enough that he asked his parents not to set the alarm so Santa could come in the front door in case he's not really magic.

5 years, 4 months, 29 days Griffin has now enlisted his little brothers in his spying escapades. Last night Dada overheard him teaching Cale to pretend to go to the bathroom so he could get out of bed and observe his parents unaware.

5 years, 3 months, 18 days Last week while in Victoria, Griffin took his mama to high tea at the Empress. He opened doors for her, pulled her chair out, and was generally delightful -- at least until he got bored. He liked he new tie so much that he slept with it.

Griffin recently began receiving an allowance. He occasionally saves his $1 a week for several weeks to purchase something special, but he has also gotten very good at finding 50 cent toys that he adores. He's generous with his allowance, and always makes sure his brothers get something, too, when he goes shopping.

5 years, 1 month, 19 days At the Renaissance Faire today, Griffin starred as the handsome prince in Robin Hood's stage play. Five years old normally seems very grown up to Griffin's parents, but he looked very sweet, small, and adorable, up on stage surrounded by all those adults.

5 years, 1 month, 12 days Griffin ate crickets, maggots, scorpions, and grasshoppers today at his 3rd birthday party. David Gordon, the Bug Chef (url), prepared lunch for the party goers while the kids hunted for ladybugs in the yard.

5 years, 1 month, 2 days It's still a surprise for Griffin's parents to take him to the pool and watch him just jump in and start swimming with his friends. But he's been swimming for a while now, so they should get used to it. It's going to be fun to introduce Griff to ocean swimming on their upcoming trip to Hawaii, and the water has been great for keeping cool during the current heat wave.

5 years Griffin is 5 years old today, as he happily tells anyone who will listen. He chose a periscope at the toy store as a present. The only problem is he now runs around the house spying on his parents. Fortunately he's not a very good spy.

4 years, 11 months, 12 days On Sunday at 1pm, Griffin's parents bought him a bicycle for his upcoming fifth birthday. Less than four hours later, the helmet purchased with the bike saved his life. Jaime and Alex still can't believe their good luck -- or their bad luck.

Griffin was so excited about his new bike that he insisted on wearing his helmet, knee pads, elbow pads, and hand guards long after tiring of bike riding. He even wore them over to a friend's house, where he and his friend played a hiding game. Griff hid behind a desk on the second floor, next to a floor-to-ceiling window. The window was opened, with only a screen covering it. While hiding, Griffin leaned backwards against the screen and fell backwards, through the window, head first onto the concrete patio 12 feet below. He landed hard enough to fracture his skull even with the helmet on.

Jaime and Alex were summoned within minutes, and the paramedics arrived shortly after. What followed was a harrowing trip to the ER (first at Overlake, and then at Harborview) where it wasn't obvious how much he had been injured. Many x-rays, doctors' visits, and hours later, everyone feels pretty confident that despite a small fracture, he's going to be fine. Griff is home and being watched carefully to make sure he doesn't become confused, tired, or nauseous. He needs to not bump his head again for the next month, but otherwise he can resume his normal activities. The fracture should heal pretty quickly on its own.

Things he really didn't enjoy about the experience: Having his head immobilized and being strapped to a hard board for many, many hours. Getting an IV. Not being allowed to eat.

Things he thought were fun: The CT scan, because the table he lay on moved around. Riding in an ambulance. Talking to the doctors.

The pediatrician attending Griffin at the ER told him he couldn't have been better prepared to fall out the window. Griff thinks next time he should wear a parachute. But his parents plan on keeping him confined to the ground until he's 35. It was really, really scary.

4 years, 11 months, 2 days Summer is here, and Griffin has spent his days recently at the beach or in the back yard running through the sprinkler with his neighborhood friends. He also loves exploring the log pile and bushes at the far end of the lawn, and comes home with all sorts of treasures and stories of magical occurrences.

Griffin has also been really interested in math, counting, and numbers. Counting to 100 is a favorite activity. He's also gotten good at doing multiplication by three, since things often get parcelled out between him, Cale, and Dillon.

Griff recently started receiving a weekly $1 allowance, which he seems to find almost as much fun to count as to spend. Mom and Dad have been very impressed with how he's handled the money: saving over several weeks to make a "big" purchase, buying treats to share with his younger brothers, and donating a portion to a charitable cause -- all without any prompting!

4 years, 9 months, 26 days Bugs, bugs, bugs! Griff has been all about bugs lately. It's all Mama and Dada can do to keep the bugs he finds outside most of the time.

4 years, 8 months, 12 days Griffin is the leader of quite a clan of little boys. In the mornings and evenings, he checks on Brier to make sure he wakes up happy and goes to bed giggling. During the day, he keeps Cale and Dillon entertained by sending them on reconnaissance missions or adventures in the yard. It's nice to see how much the four boys really enjoy each other.
