Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I come into your office?
A: You should treat this just like any other office. If the door/curtain is open, yes. Otherwise, no. Please do not come in while we are away. This is our private space.

Q: Is this really your office?
A: Yes! From November 11 until sometime in December, we (Jaime and Mike) will be working in these two pods.

Q: Your office isn't locked. Can I borrow your books and other stuff while you are away? (I promise I'll return it.)
A: If you get permission to borrow something, you may. Otherwise, no. This is just like in your office.

Q: Do you mind if I sit in the playroom and talk to my friends, eat lunch, drink beer, etc...?
A: Not at all. Our pods are private spaces but the space they are in is public. This is the most likely setup in the new building as well. Please continue using the public space as you always have.

Q: Why are you doing this? (Are you nuts?)
A: We're doing this in the name of science! (Yes, we're a little nuts.) But we're hoping, given this experiment, to be able to say with some authority whether or not we like working in a pod. We have not yet made up our minds.

Q: I'm annoyed that you are moving into my playroom. How can I make you leave?
A: If you feel this way, please talk to us. We can try to work something out.

Q: Can I tear down your pod to build a better one?
A: NO! We don't tear down your office, do we?0

Q: Is that stuff fire proof?
A: Not yet. It can be made flame proof though. Please don't light our offices on fire.

Q: What material will they "really" use for the pods?
A: Cardboard. Yes, "really". Other options are also being explored, such as Lego type blocks and various types of foam.

Q: Am I going to be forced to work in one of these things?
A: Absolutely not. The new building still has lots of flexibility with regard to its internal space. Most people will have normal 4-ish person offices. If people want smaller private spaces, they can choose a pod instead.

Q: Where can I find more information on this?
A: http://www.ai.mit.edu/~teevan/pods

Q: I think this is a great/horrible idea. To whom should I send comments?
A: podflame@ai.mit.edu
moltmans@ai.mit.edu
teevan@ai.mit.edu
