We the Living by Ayn Rand
"For those of you who dislike Ayn Rand (and I can't say I'm her biggest fan), this book is completely different than her others. It is her first book (and thus slightly raw and melodramatic), a novel of Communist Russia, not autobiographical, but certainly direct experience. This is my favorite book in the whole world because this book fundamentally changed the way I thought. Of course, I was only about 18 when I read it and I had to read it about 5 times before I really understood what was going on ;-) It's a study of three people who (as the book cover says) assert the right to live their own lives and pursue their own happiness while in a difficult and ugly situation (totalitarian state). None of the three succeed: it is the ways in which they fail that is so fascinating."

It's not a hefty book, but is actually a pretty long read (the material is dense) so start soon. It's really important to finish the whole thing.

Host: Elise Riordan
Date: July 14, 2004
Food Theme: For food theme I would NOT suggest Communist Russia fare as I have no great love for rancid sunflower seed oil and millet. Perhaps we can do hefty farmerish fare instead. Something with potatoes.

Location: [directions]
114 Centre St., Brookline, MA 02446
It's very easy to get there taking either the Green Line (the C train) To Coolidge corner and then walking up Beacon a block to Centre St and going right on Centre, or taking the 66 bus which starts in Harvard Sq and goes all the way down N. Harvard and Harvard St (you would get off on Harvard St. near Fuller St. which is right next to Khoury's Funeral Home -- my apartment is on the corner of Centre and Fuller St.s, just a block in from Harvard St.) Anyone can call me at 617-645-5587 if you get confused.
