The Secret History by Donna Tartt
"Live Forever. The Secret History is one of my favorite books. The main character, Richard Papen is a junior who recently transferred to a new college, and he wants to study Greek. This book is a wonderful reminder of the Greek literature you read in college with countless references to works of Plato, Aristotle, the great Homer, Virgil (as the ghost of Dido from Aeneid appears several times - what I think to be the greatest love story of all time), and most importantly Euripides. The story is a modern day reenactment of the Bacchae, a story about the Dionysus, the god of wine and pleasure. The book is about releasing your animal side, but unfortunately in our modern day, consequences abound. The book is outstanding if you have read and enjoyed many of the Greek classics, but even if you haven't it is a great story on its own (as Louis-Philippe attests) and I hope (and think) you will enjoy it. Of course, the food theme will be decadent. We will fill ourselves with wine and other hedonistic food. (And of course, Greek food is definitely appropriate.)"
