You knew it was going to happen
So I had some time to screw with the MDD some more...and fix Apple's mistakes when it came to thermal design. TONS of pics here...took about 6 hrs on saturday and a few hours sunday to finish the whole thing up. It rocks tho...the hard drive is the loudest component. It's about half the noise level of my Quicksilver. It's icy cold inside too...

Strip the plastics off and get ready for fun
The backside...airport antenna and such
Here you can see the door fan with the side removed
Thanks for the PCI cooling vents...that the MOBO blocks...good design...
The previously shredded back (see MDD cooling part 1)...
The front...nifty grille...
Where'd it go?
Bling bling...pull the useless crap...and insert...
A 92mm fan out of a PM 7500. The loudest fan...slated to be replaced
A little aluminum ducting...
Oh yeah...that's gonna chill the HDDs
Sweet...the way it SHOULD HAVE BEEN DESIGNED! Cold air straight in.
Mmm...fresh cold air intake :^D
On to the top...insert 120mm hole saw here
From the inside
Hmm...now we're talkin :)
2 120mm fans blowing air out of the top of the case
Scope that sucker...suckin air past ALL the PCI slots...and AGP card
I'm gonna paint the fan silver and put a grille on it (will help it blend in)
What's this...there appears to be something inside that case door...
Now what could that be?
Looks to be a pair of 80mm fans
Screw em together on the front...
and on the back...
Pull the modem header. and slip em in. They wedge fit perfect.
Looks to be chilly...even on my small hacked Dual 800 heatsink.
A bit of trimming to clear RAM Dimms (need a short dimm for slot 1).
some ducting lets me keep the fans at 7v. I can go to 12v for hotter chips.
Word :D
One trick to the 80mm fans...trimming the HDD tray so you can close the door
Now you're talkin
There's a flange on the main chassis here that had to be trimmed as well
The CPU I'm runnin...Single 1 GHz w 2 meg L3 (set to 1067 on 133 bus currently)
I had to make custom mounting brackets...
The angle aluminum bolts to CPU card...then the bracket bolts to the case
And the heatsink clips bolt to the bracket too
The back of the module here is held down by 2 tabs inside the case
Front 2 holes bolt to case...rear is held on by tabs bolted to rear of case
Finished product...no more bling inside the nostrils...just a 92mm fan :o)
Pretty sweet...and quiet (running all fans at 7v right now)
