The Sinking of the Fox River

We were on our way home from Kodiak in December 2000 when we got the call that the M/V Fox River had experienced an engine room fire. Everyone had been safely evacuated, but the vessel was now adrift. We were dispatched to babysit it until a salvage vessel could get it under tow.

It wasn't able to get it under tow, so we babysat it for some more.

The Fox River, adrift and unmanned, overturned during the night and we were forced to treat it like a hazzard to navigation... so we broke out the 50 caliber machine guns and put a thousand rounds into it.

LTJG Green, our Public Affairs officer at the time, compiled a presentation on the sinking of the Fox River. This link will open that presentation in a new window.

009 Where'd it go?
By now, we'd finished with our mission, began our trip home, got the call on the Fox River and started babysitting.

010
010 I don't see it...
For some reason, we couldn't see it anymore...
013
013 Aha!
So that's why we can't see it on radar.

018 Flying Bridge
After spending an extra half a week underway, we were all too ready to watch the Fox River sink. Everyone not on watch came out, most up to the flying bridge.

019
019 FIRE!!!

020
020 FIRE!!!

021
021 Um...Fire?

022
022 Still firing...

026
026 Still Afloat
It was overturned when we started shooting it, wasn't it?
027
027 Keep Firing
028
028 Did you say "Stop?"
030
030 Huh?

031
031 No?

032
032 Ok, We'll keep firing.

034
034 Bullet Holes
A few more hits and it'll be swiss cheese...
but it's still afloat.
037
037 Wait a second...
It's going down!

038
038 Just for good measure.

039
039 Just because it's fun.
041
041 Can we go home now?

042
042 In all, it was a good trip.
