We were on our way home from Kodiak in December 2000 when we got the call that the M/V Fox River had experienced an engine room fire. Everyone had been safely evacuated, but the vessel was now adrift. We were dispatched to babysit it until a salvage vessel could get it under tow.
It wasn't able to get it under tow, so we babysat it for some more.
The Fox River, adrift and unmanned, overturned during the night and we were forced to treat it like a hazzard to navigation... so we broke out the 50 caliber machine guns and put a thousand rounds into it.

LTJG Green, our Public Affairs officer at the time, compiled a
presentation on the sinking of the Fox River. This link will open that presentation in a new window.

| During the night? It was December in Alaska. Day only lasts a couple of hours in December in Alaska. OF COURSE it was nighttime. |
