Ladybug, Ladybug
Andy - 6 years old. Hand me down, too-large, Superman pajamas. Messy, long hair.
John - 15 years old. Clean, white t-shirt. Blue jeans.
Dominic - 35 years old. Off-white, sweat stained t-shirt. Dark black work pants.
Andy and John's bedroom. Two beds, window in between, with nightstand under window.
(Andy walks to one bed, climbs up, leans towards window, with his index finger pointing in front of him)
ANDY
(singing)
Ladybug, ladybug
JOHN
(Offstage)
Andy!
ANDY
(singing)
Why don't you fly?
JOHN
(Offstage)
Andy! Come on...
ANDY
(Opens window, still singing)
Why do you crawl,
JOHN
(Offstage)
ANDY! Diiiiiiiiiinner!
ANDY
(singing)
When you've got the sky?
(John enters)
JOHN
There you are.
ANDY
(Andy puts finger out window, lets ladybug go, sings to himself)
Ladybug, ladybug...
JOHN
What are you doing, Andy?
ANDY
(noticing John)
Nothing.
JOHN
Why didn't you come down for dinner?
ANDY
I had a ladybug.
JOHN
Oh. Where'd it go?
ANDY
I let it go outside.
JOHN
You know they're good luck?
ANDY
They are?
JOHN
That's what some people think.
ANDY
Do you think that?
JOHN
Sure.
ANDY
Have you ever found one?
JOHN
Nope.
ANDY
Oh.
JOHN
You must be more lucky than me. But come on, let's go eat dinner.
ANDY
Is dad home?
JOHN
Not yet. Soon though.
ANDY
I'm not hungry.
JOHN
No, come on Andrew.
ANDY
I don't want to.
JOHN
Before he gets here.
ANDY
No.
JOHN
Andrew, come on.
ANDY
Tell me a story first.
JOHN
Then you'll come eat?
ANDY
Yes.
JOHN
You promise?
ANDY
I promise.
JOHN
(Sitting down on bed next to Andy)
Okay. What kind of story?
ANDY
About mommy.
JOHN
Mom... hmm. Which story?
ANDY
How she used to sing.
JOHN
To us?
ANDY
Yes. When dad wasn't home
DOMINIC
(Offstage)
JOHN!
JOHN
She'd put us in bed...
ANDY
Then she'd turn out the lights, right?
JOHN
Yep. Then she'd start to sing.
DOMINIC
(From offstage)
JOHN, GET OUT HERE!
ANDY
What song?
JOHN
Any song we wanted. Then you'd fall asleep and I -
(footsteps heard, Dominic enters, door slams behind him)
DOMINIC
John!
JOHN
Yeah?
DOMINIC
Answer me when I call!
JOHN
I was telling a story.
ANDY
About mommy.
JOHN
(To Andy)
Shh.
DOMINIC
Why aren't you eating?
JOHN
Andy wasn't hungry yet.
DOMINIC
Your food is cold.
JOHN
It's alright. I'll heat it again.
DOMINIC
NO! You should've eaten already.
JOHN
It's alright.
(Turning to Andy)
You hungry yet?
ANDY
No.
JOHN
You want another story?
DOMINIC
No more stories! You're eating!
JOHN
It'll just take a minute.
DOMINIC
No, you're both coming now!
(Dominic leaves, John gets up and shuts door, walks back to Andy)
JOHN
I'm not hungry either.
ANDY
Tell another story.
JOHN
On Saturdays sometimes
DOMINIC
(Offstage)
JOHN!
JOHN
We'd all go on drives.
ANDY
Dad too?
JOHN
Yep. All of us
DOMINIC
(Offstage)
JOHN, NOW!
ANDY
Where'd we go?
JOHN
No where. Just drove around.
(A rush of footsteps, Dominic enters, throwing door open, then closes it hard. It half falls off hinges. Dominic rushes towards John)
DOMINIC
We're having dinner now!
JOHN
In a minute - I was
(Dominic picks up John, then drags him towards the door. John doesn't struggle. Dominic shoves John to floor. Andy starts crying.)
DOMINIC
GET UP!
(John sits up.)
DOMINIC
STAND UP!
(John doesn't move.)
JOHN
(Quietly)
No.
DOMINIC
Get up!
(John doesn't move, Dominic moves toward John, stops, then walks out, knocking door completely off hinges)
DOMINIC
(Offstage)
NO DINNER!
JOHN
(Gets up slowly, walks to bed, sits down next to Andy.)
It's okay, buddy.
(Hugs Andy)
Look, I'm okay.
DOMINIC
(Offstage, crashing of plates is heard)
You're not hungry? FINE!
ANDY
I want mommy.
JOHN
I know you do. I do too.
DOMINIC
(Offstage)
Go hungry. I don't care...
JOHN
Sing a song for me, Andy.
ANDY
(Begins to stop crying)
What song?
JOHN
Any one you want.
ANDY
Wanna hear my ladybug song?
JOHN
Sure.
(John gets two backpacks from under bed, begins filling them with money taken from a bag in nightstand and stuffs clothes from drawers in.)
ANDY
I learned it in school.
JOHN
Okay.
(While Andy sings, John puts one of the backpacks on Andy's back, picks him up, puts him on nightstand, climbs onto bed, climbs out window, stretches arms out for Andy, who, after finishing singing, crawls out.)
ANDY
Ladybug, ladybug...
Why don't you fly?
Why do you crawl when you've got the sky?
DOMINIC
(Offstage)
Don't bother coming out of your room tonight. Neither of you.
ANDY
Ladybug, ladybug,
Why do you stay?
You have wings that can take you away.
