My experience happened a long time ago, in approximately February of 1984, when I was 16, almost 17. I was living in Springfield, Oregon at the time, and dating a young man of 20 that I had met while taking classes at the local community college. His name was Billy.
Billy lived with his parents in a small town called Veneta, about 10 miles west of Eugene. Springfield is on the east side of Eugene. There's a long straight road that you travel along to get from Veneta to Eugene. On the right is a huge reservoir, Fern Ridge, and on the other side a large open area of marshy land.
On this particular night, I had dinner at Billy and his parent's home, and I was out pretty late. I believe it was 10 PM before Billy and I left for him to drive me home.
As we were just starting out driving along the straight stretch, I noticed a small red light in the sky that was slowly moving along a distant hill side. It would go straight down to the ground and then back up, then move slowly to another spot. It kept doing this. It was pretty far off, and at first I thought it was a helicopter or something. I pointed it out to Billy, and we were sort of keeping our eyes on it and wondering what it could be. I think I was a little more curious about it. Something about it just bothered me.
As it would disappear into the trees I'd say, "Where'd it go? Where is it?!" in anticipation of seeing it again. As we drove closer in its direction, we passed through a fairly large area of trees along side the road. I lost sight of it for a few minutes. When I reoriented myself on where I'd last seen it, there is was again! I was so enthralled with this object... or whatever it was... this tiny red light. Billy at this point was somewhat sick of my enthusiasm and said, "The airport is over there, it's probably just a helicopter or something!", which of course just started me off on, "But what is it doing??"
Another line of trees blocked my view again, just as I was also beginning to lose interest. Then as we appeared out into the open again... right there to the right of us... looming above the side of the road, was this huge object. It was so close, just right there beside us probably less than 100 feet in the air. My first thought was that it had to be a helicopter, since it was hovering in one place. I remember Billy saying, "What in the world IS that!?"
There were cars pulled to the side of the road and people standing out along the guard rail. More cars were slowing down and pulling over from both directions. We were forced to slow and come to a stop with everyone else. I felt in a daze, looking around at everyone else that was looking around. The wind was blowing really hard and the tall grass in the field was swishing hard with a force. I saw a woman that was holding a baby. Her hair was blowing hard in the wind, her baby, dressed only in underwear, was crying to get back in the car. Seeing all of this commotion, and digging through the glove box for Billy's mom's camera, I hadn't gotten a good look at it, except to see that the lights on it were so bright and that it was hovering there, motionless. I was wondering why all the excitement over a helicopter? It wasn't until Billy asked me to roll down the window that I realized that the object wasn't making any sound at all! Squinting through the bright lights, for the only real good look I got, I saw that the craft was large and very close above us, triangular in shape, flat on top, with flat sides. On each corner on the bottom there was a bright white light and shiny metal with splits in it, spinning around the lights. When I realized that this was nothing that I'd ever seen before, and knowing that it wasn't a helicopter, I started screaming at Billy hysterically to drive off! "Lets go!! Now!", I was screaming over and over. He didn't want to go, but I wouldn't let him stay. He drove off and I never looked back.
When I got home it was about 11 o'clock. I went in and woke my Mom up to tell her about what we had seen on the way home and then went to bed myself. My Mom told me when she got home from work the next day that she had heard about it several times on the radio during the day, and that Project Bluebook was called out. We never heard anything about it again after that.
I had quickly forgotten about it, being that I was only 16. I think I shut it out and probably didn't really have an interest in or realize the importance of what I'd seen. I can remember back now though and relive every detail, and I can feel the fear and shock that I felt then.
I told a couple people about it here and there, but the memory of it coming back to me for a brief day just as quickly disappeared again...until when I was 24. I was watching "Unsolved Mysteries" with my husband, son, newborn daughter, mother and brother when they had a show on about the Belgium UFO sightings. When they flashed up a sketch of the triangular UFO that hundreds of people have been witnessing for sometime in Belgium, I just jumped straight out of my chair screaming "That's what I saw! There it is!!!" Everyone was looking at me like I'd lost my mind! It had been so long ago, and something that I had shut away, and nearly forgotten. But when I saw that picture, it was like I was 16 again. And in seeing it, all over my hair stood on end and I was covered in goose bumps. I just paced the floor with excitement. FINALLY, someone's seen what I've seen! And there it is, right there on TV!! There's the proof... I'm not crazy after all!!
