Introduction
When I got this book, I had already thrown myself into two other
Mac OS X-specific books (which you'll soon be able to read my
review of by the way) and so Mac OS X: The Missing Manual was
kind of left for itself for a while. That turned out to be quite
a mistake, since it is simply one of the best books you can get
if you want to read up on the deepness of Mac OS X.

A Missing Manual
The Second edition has been is an updated version of the first
book which first appeared about a year and a half ago. In depth
information about Jaguar has been added among many other things.
"It
really IS the book that should have been in the box"
Personally,
I think David Pogue is a genius. His writing skills are clearly
not open to question - Pogue writes in a relaxed humourous way,
combining fun with work. He takes the pain that usually comes
when trying to read manuals away and replaces it with a feeling
of wanting to read more and know more. It's almost like you're
going out on an adventure with your Mac.
For
switchers and Mac OS 9-users there is a very helpful section
in the book called "Where'd it go?". The section
is divided in two parts where the first one addresses users
of earlier versions of the Mac OS. The second part addresses
users that has switched from another platform to Mac (simply
called switchers). Here you can quickly and effectively
browse through all entries and find whatever you're looking
for, where Disk First Aid went for example. There are also
appendixes for Installing Jaguar (Mac OS X 10.2), Troubleshooting,
Keystrokes and a "Where to go from here" appendix
that lists source of information if you still thirst for
more.
The
book is very nicely organized with boxes with additional
information. These boxes also cleverely stretches beyond
the page's natural width, allowing more room for a screenshot
for example. Wipe that smirk off your face! I know it sounds
crazy. Just get a copy of the book - it'll be worth it. |

The Missing CD
There is no CD-ROM included with the book and the reason for that
is that O'Reilly wants to keep the cost of the book down to a
minimum (which is a good thing :). Also, any software included
on a CD-ROM will quickly become outdated and the best source of
software is still the internet. If you want to get a hold of any
of the software mentioned in the book you just point your browser
to www.missingmanuals.com. Here you can grab the whole "Missing
CD" from any of the books in the Missing Manual-series. Smart.
Positive
comments: Fun and learning at the same time.
Negative comments: Somewhat lightweighted. There
are thicker books in this field that goes more in-depth.
Summary: On the whole a great, fun and learning
book that fills most users needs (beginner to expert). It really
IS the book that should have been in the box.
