- 1. What is a computer?

- A computer is a device which accepts input of information in the form of digital data and manipulates this information based upon a sequence of instructions which tell it how to process the data in order to produce the required output. Basically. - Updated: February 12, 2003

- 2. What are canoes made of?
- Top
- That's a very open question. It's like asking what houses are made of!
It is possible to buy (deep breath...) all wood canoes (expensive!), wood and canvas canoes (fairly expensive!), Aluminium canoes (cheaper but with their downsides), fibre glass canoes, (cheap and cheerful!), Kevlar canoes (NOT indestructable, and not cheap!) and Royalex canoes (very nearly indestructable, but heavy and quite reasonably priced!).
So take your pick! - Updated: February 12, 2003

- 3. Whats the weight of the moon?
- Top
- If you're trying to catch me out, Sparkie, it won't work! ;)
First of all, you can't easily talk about 'weight' when it comes to talking about the moon. When we talk about the weight of an object, we're talking about the measuring the force of gravity acting on the object. So the weight of the moon would be a measurement of the interactivity between itself and the earth's gravity. In fact there would be a measurable force due to it's proximity to earth. But it wouldn't be a lot of use to talk about an object in space that doesn't happen to have a gravitational pull from another object because it would have no weight!
Mass, then, is to do with the physical amount of matter in an object and not about the forces acting upon it (although just to confuse the issue it does determine how hard it is to push the object around). Therefore the mass is constant, and a much more useful statistic to measure by.
So with that in mind, on to your question. The mass of the moon is about 7.35x10^22 kg. That's 73,500,000,000,000,000,000,000 kgs. Or approximately 1/80th the mass of Earth. - Updated: February 12, 2003

- I have to be honest and say that I didn't find any specific information that would officially confirm or deny this. I did however find one entry by a certain Dale Short in a forum for discussion of 'Angle of Repose' on ConstantReader.com (which seemed to have a fair smattering of good quality posts by educated people) where he made a comment to the effect that he had read an article that said that many visitors and guests of the Stegners' had been surprised to find that Mary was not in fact disabled. It was also remarked that he too would like to know what, if any, Wallace Stegner's connection to polio was.
So although I can't definitively answer your question, I think it would be reasonable to guess the answer is 'no'! - Updated: February 12, 2003

- 9. How can I stop spam?

- Another good question. I hate spam. I hate the scum who send spam. And yes, that may seem a little strong but that's exactly what they are. Scum. Low life, pond dwelling parasites. It's a criminal act, and they should be treated as the worst kind of offender. Lethal injection or the electric chair in my opinion.
(Steps down from soapbox to answer question) There is more than one way to skin a cat, and there is more than one way to tackle spam. There isn't really one definitive solution, and what works best for one person might not work great for another. It depends on your ISP, email accounts, email software, what kind of spam you tend to get, how you use your email etc etc. As such, the best I can suggest is to peruse the vast array of links on the following sites and see what clicks with you.

Check out the Spam Fighters Toolkit, an excellent article by Ralph Tegtmeier reproduced here with permission. It gives a far more comprehensive overview of the action you can take with regard to spam, and provides a wealth of excellent links, including to measures, tools and services a webmaster can take to outwit email harvesting spambots. - 11. Where is the best place to download game demos or get info on new releases this week?

- It's a good question! (Thought we were supposed to be doing stupid questions!?).
Mainly because a lot of the sites we used to rely on have annoyingly decided to charge for the priviledge of downloading what ought to be free demos. Sure, sometimes they have free alternative downloads, but you tend to queue behind a zillion other people who want the same download. I know servers cost money, and I know that content on the web in general seems to be moving towards commercial pay-per-use or subscription based models, but I think that goes against the principles of what the internet is about, and personally I'd rather invest a little more time finding free alternatives, cos I'll be damned if I'm gonna pay to download game demos.
So with all that said, on to answering your question!
www.gamezone.com
More than just demos, this includes videos and other game media for downloads as well. Whilst this is 'a good thing' in some respects, it can be a bit frustrating to go to a link from the 'latest downloads' to find it's some 13 meg video of fmv and not a demo after all. However, the download archives themselves are much more comprehensive and tell you exactly what is available, and if you can be bothered to browse through the huge range there is some cool stuff to download.
Most of the downloads are links back to the 'official' site downloads or mirror sites, and not hosted by the site themselves.
One thing about this site is that not only do they have the usual latest downloads, but a vast range of older demos and more obscure shareware games which don't generally get the recognition they deserve - there are some absolute gems to be found in shareware games. This is one of my favourite sites for browsing games to see what's about.
www.gamexperts.com
A good, no nonsense site with games for most formats, demos, cheats, patches etc. Again they tend to link to other servers for download, and some of those tend to be to places like fileplanet where you need an account to sign up and stuff, but for most downloads they have a couple of locations, and generally one or more are free no-hassle downloads. So this one is well worth a look too.
www.pcgameworld.com
Dedicated, obviously, to PC games, and a good source of the latest free downloads. My only major gripe with this site is the annoying amount of popups, adverts and other commercial crap that obscure the content. We've all got to make money with our sites where we can, but not at the expense of diluting your content to the point you wonder after a couple of clicks whether you should just find another site altogether. Still, if you have a popup stopper, a good site!
www.demonews.com
Dedicated to demos, this really is a no-nonsense site for downloading. Most of the recent additions on the front page have links directly to the files themselves, and from the 'File List' pages most have a number of mirrors to choose from. If you know what you want and just want to go straight there and get it, then this is probably the friendliest site of the lot.
So there you go. That should keep you busy downloading! - Updated: October 23, 2002

OK. Well that's what I did, and the following seem pretty good:
