This example was inspired by the gargoyles that decorate churches and other gothic structures. Many gargoyles are actually functional downspouts which are used to direct rainwater away from building foundations. As such they are subject to a variety of different weathering effects.

This model was created by applying a single layer of stone to a large scanned mesh. Since the planned surface edits will not penetrate deep into the statue, I was able to create a hollow model which requires less memory. The cutaway image in the upper right shows the layer thickness.
