To reduce the number of elements initially created, the distance field grid can be collapsed to an adaptive octree representation. Grid samples are removed in areas which do not contain an isosurface crossing and in areas where interpolation of a coarser grid adequately matches the fine grid.

In this example, the number of tetrahedra produced by tetrahedralization of the adaptive grid is less than half of that created from the uniform grid. Unfortunately the model still contains many poorly shaped elements.
