If the previous two types of transformations were unable to remove or improve the element satisfactorily, vertex smoothing can be used. Each vertex is moved to the centroid of its neighbors as shown in the diagram. This operation can be performed with convex or concave neighborhoods, as long as negative volume elements are not introduced.
