We do plan to let the programmer see where all the cycles
are going as his software is used by actual users.  I would
not want to give the impression that we expect to be able
to optimize code automatically, though of course that would
be a fine thing to try as a next step.

Frankly, I'd be happy enough just to have decent profiling...
