Several people tried experiments back when patterns were the craze
(late 90s), resulting in a few small trees being pulped into theses.
I don't recall any of them coughing up anything of value.  The real
problem is that unsophisticated tools simply don't reveal very much at
all; it could be that the authors of the tools whose descriptions I
saw didn't bother putting in the extra effort that endless tuning
demands.  It could also be that they don't make students today the way
they used to. (-:
