If you use a layout manager, the relative sizes of all the components in a panel are governed by a complex arbitration process. Each type of layout manager handles the size-arbitration process in its own way.

You may, if you wish, avoid layout managers, but then you must fix the sizes of your components and their positions, as described in Segment 964.
