A final key area of related work is procedural modeling. With these techniques, complex geometry and surface properties can be specified with algorithms and mathematical functions. Examples of procedural modeling include fractal terrains, solid texturing, plant modeling with L-systems, cellular texturing for architecture applications, and automatic city generation.
In particular, my work on the procedural authoring of solid models is analogous to the RenderMan shading language for image creation.
