For the final example, I investigate the multi-layered object which is constructed during the lost wax casting method for creating bronze statues. The layer boundaries in this object are derived from the surface representation of the final statue, but have very different shapes.
The process begins with a roughly shaped clay core. The artist covers the core with wax and carves a detailed statue in the malleable wax. When finished, the statue is covered with clay, and heated in a kiln to remove the wax. Molten bronze is poured into the clay mold, and finally when cool, the clay is broken away to reveal the statue. I have simulated the final step in this process . . .
