I very much agree with you, jrm.  I would only observe that the
problem you describe is a bit different from the one for which I
believe call/cc to be a most appropriate primitive operator, in that I
have additional requirements and constraints, some of which I stated
very informally, and some of which I assume to be familiar to 
practitioners.

Your approach is very interesting, but probably a solution to a
different problem, one with which I don't have practical familiarity.
