Abie had been
caught in a Cossack round-up. When the Cossacks had gotten through shooting
arbitrarily into the crowd, Abie had been left crippled, losing an arm and a leg. When
Etel, Gussie, Max, and Rose came to America in 1909, they had to leave Abie behind. He would
not be allowed into the US until they could establish that he would not be a burden on
the country. He died in the US during the Spanish Flu pandemic of 1918-20.
