Yakov had his right-hand pointer finger cut off at the knuckle. He had done this in order to escape army service in Russia.

He was a vest manufacturer and employed many of the relatives. Tante and Uncle's home was the center of all hospitality for the family and the first stop for immigrant relatives coming to the States, including teenage Sonia Sonia Lauterstein. There were 11 kids plus Sonia in 2 bedrooms. The parents had 1 bedroom, the girls had the other, and the boys slept under the dining room table. Sonia worked in Yakov's vest-making factory. Soon after she arrived, she took Yakov's workers out on strike against him.
