A status register is a collection of binary switches that either tells you about the state of an inputoutput device or allows you to tell an inputoutput device what to do or how to do what it does. When dealing with an inputoutput device, you frequently have occasion to transfer information back and forth between a status register and a status variable that you define so as to hold status bits.
