• A variable is an identifier that names a chunk of memory.
• If you want to introduce a variable, then you must declare the data type of that variable in a variable declaration:

  data type variable name; 
  

• If you want to provide an initial value for a variable, then include that initial value in the declaration statement:

  data type variable name = initial-value expression; 
  

• If you want to reassign a variable, then use an assignment statement:

  variable name = new-value expression; 
  

• The integral data types are char, short, int, and long.
