Because you are expected to use the features of a graphical user interface to display information on a screen, most Smalltalk implementations do not offer any methods for displaying formatted text on the transcript or for writing formatted text to a file.

Fortunately, Smalltalk provides all the tools that you need to write your own formatting methods easily. Read this chapter only if you need to use those tools.
